MODERN NATURE PERFORMANCE

Modern Nature have released a new single 'Performance', along with a visualiser, taken from the new album, Island of Noise, which is out now as a limited edition boxset and available digitally on 28th January. From the hours of improvisation, the band have also made Island Of Silence; an impressionistic instrumental take on the album, mixed in mono with the album’s co-producer Ed Deegan. Both records will be issued as a box-set, which is made completely from recycled material (even the vinyl!) and is limited to 1000 copies worldwide. 'Performance' “is written from the perspective of someone seeing or realising something overwhelming for the first time,” says frontman Jack Cooper.  “Whilst walking across a bridge near our old house at the height of the pandemic, I could see cranes moving around in east London. It really took me aback to see industry ticking away in the midst of the chaos. I think Evan’s percussive clicking and the relentless piano note make the piece. Everything else gets to move around them.” The song sees percussive rhythms swirl around your head like fast-moving clouds, underpinned by the double bass and woody-toned drums. The unaffected electric guitar has a neutral tone, allowing the focus to reside purely on the inquisitive melody that responds to the softly-sung vocals. Accompanied by strung-out notes on viola, trumpet and saxophone, there's a certain warmth to the track. Modern Nature tour the UK in the spring (dates here). For now, check out 'Performance' and the accompanying video. -Ellie Rose-Davies
